On banning the veil
The debate on banning the veil has already been saturated with white non-Muslims who think they know best. To that end, I’m going to keep this short.
Earlier this year I did some work with Tower Hamlets College. I met a 17 year old Muslim girl there who wore the hijab. She told me about an occasion where a man had shouted “terrorist!” at her as she was walking down the street.
To summarise: before the government had made any legislation about the veil, a grown man already thought it was socially acceptable to shout abuse at a teenage girl because she was wearing a hijab.
So my question to MPs like Sarah Wollaston is not about the message you are sending to girls like her by criminalising the veil. My question is this: what sort of message do you think you’re sending men like him?
